Avery Tap Takeover at Liberty Street Tonight

by theelvee_w2oe3m

The Tavern on Liberty is hosting an Avery Brewing Company tap takover tonight FROM 7PM-11PM.  They’ll have eight drafts on, available in two different flights for $11 each.  Ted Williams, the national sales director for the brewery, will be there giving our t-shirts and pint glasses as well as answering questions.

On tap:

FLIGHT #1

Avery Old Jubilation: This winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Abv 8.3%

Avery Hog Heaven: Dry-hopped barleywine style ale. This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover’s delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel candy-like malt finish. This is a serious beer for serious beer aficionados. Abv 9.2%

Avery The Czar Imperial Stout: Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. Abv 11.5%

Avery The Beast Grand Cru: With a deep burgundy color and aromas of honey, nutmeg, mandarin orange and pineapple, this massive and challenging brew has flavors akin to a beautiful Carribean rum. Dates, plums, raisins and molasses are dominant in a rich vinous texture. Abv 14.9%

FLIGHT #2

Avery White Rascal: A truly authentic Belgian style wheat or “white” ale, this Rascal is unfiltered and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly fruity thirst quencher.Abv 5.6%

Avery The Reverend Belgian Quad: A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into it and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Abv 10%

DuganA Double IPA: As fervent devotees of hops, we found ourselves on a quest to create a transcendental IPA capable of quenching our voracious lupulin desires. Enlightened, DuganA IPA was born:brutally bitter, dank, piney and resinous ale designed for those seeking a divine hop experience.
Abv 8.5%

Avery Mephistopheles Stout: Named after the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Abv 15.1%

Will smoking be suspendend during those hours, or will we have to swallow cigarrete filth with each flight and come home smelling like a cheap dive?

Unfortunately from the ones I’ve been to smoking is allowed. Hate trying to smell/taste the nuances in good beer and then someone next to me lights up a menthol. Totally kills it.

For what it’s worth, I believe the back room with the pool table is non-smoking from 5PM to 10PM…

Perhaps they will realize someday that it totally kills THEM as a true beer connosseur establishment. it’s a shame that a fine brewery like Avery has to endure their sophomoric, beer-unfriendly policies. Get a clue Tavern!! No one will take your food or beer seriously if you cater to smoking as your vip clientele! Get a clue!

The Avery / homebrewers night was off the charts! We had a packed house from 6pm on. The homebrewers seemed to be able to withstand the horrifying smokey conditions , oh forget that they were in the pool room where there is no smoking allowed. Although some of them did enjoy the ability to smoke out in the main room where we have 4, yes 4! separate smoke eaters running. Now I will admit that even 4 smoke eaters won’t eliminate all the smoke or the smell, I challenge anyone to show me a bar that allows smoking in the Lehigh valley that does more to mitigate the smoke. Of course some, like the Westender above, will never be able to allow free choice and think tobacco is the most evil substance in the world. I, on the other hand, feel that the state of Pa, in it’s infinite wisdom, has allowed bars with under 20% in house food sales to decide for themselves if they would like to allow smoking. And considering that in the Westend there are at least 6 non smoking bars that the Westender and other anti tobacco fanatics can go to, calling me sophomoric for allowing smoking is uninformed at best. If smoke offends you that much , go to one of those other bars! I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the Westender is in fact the owners of one of those other bars. The Tavern is NOT an upscale highbrow establishment.
The Tavern is a neighborhood bar.
If the freedom to smoke in a bar offends you that much then don’t come in. But if you do come in I can promise you a friendly, warm(maybe too warm) place with pizza and sandwiches as good as any in the Valley and a beer selection 2nd to none. And if you don’t get that then let me know.

I personally find smoking establishments fine, and that’s obvious from previous posts on the site. I do admit that I didn’t previously know that the pool room is non-smoking even though I’ve been to the tavern many times. My problem with the smoking was like I said, trying to enjoy the “beer geek” aspect of savoring the smell, aroma, and flavor of the beer. I was at the CBS night back whenever that was and at that point CBS was draft only and extremely rare (still is). The tavern may not be “an upscale highbrow establishment”, but the quality of beer they are serving clearly is upscale, highbrow, and world class. I know this will never change and I do believe in freedom of choice to smoke indoors and do whatever the hell you please with your establishment, and that is fine. It’s just my personal feeling that it sucked trying to enjoy a high-rated, rare beer and having someone light up right next to me (there were no other seats in the place open).

Anyways, glad to hear the night went well and the business was good. Cheers!

I completely understand where you are coming from. Believe it or not I am a non smoker and hate when smoke goes right up my nose from the end of someone’s butt! however the business reality is that smoking is good for business! And alot of people that drink great beer also smoke. Unfortunately for us the smokers never seem to write about how great it is that they can smoke inside and not be cast out in the cold like leapers. Conversely the Non-smokers frequently write to complain that they are somehow being subjected to the inhuman and cruel smell of tobacco by evil smokers and the sophmoric owners that allow it.
Wherever there can be reviews, Yelp, Beer Advocate, Yahoo..etc… you will find even the good reviews hit us for the smoke. But the fact remains that business is great!! So I must be doing something right. Even if the Westender doesn’t think so.
Your website is great and I appreciate you putting up the events and hope you will continue to do so.

I have nothing against smokers, smoking or smoking establishments. It is your business and you can do what you’d like with it. But I do have the same views as the El Vee. As a person who enjoys these sensational, artisinal craft beers, the experience is ruined by the smoke in the tavern. You’re not going to satisfy everyone, I understand. If you are convinced that smoking and craft beers has proven to be a successful business plan, absolutely roll with it . I am not a pub owner, and I am not here to insult you and your place. To me smoking contradicts your concept, and I can tell you that many people i know refuse to return to your pub on a daily basis solely and primarily because of the smoke, despite the warmth and hospitalities that you promise. But it’s your business and good luck to you.

I do not and can not know what it is your heart or head. I can only respond to your comments.
And given that you called me (and my policies) “sophomoric, beer-unfriendly ” , lamented that poor Avery beer “endure” these policies and that I should “get a clue” I think my response was pretty measured.
Good luck to you and please remember that our sidewalk cafe is open from May1-Oct 1 every year.
