Musikfest Picks Day 2, August 4th

by theelvee_w2oe3m

Remember yesterday when I said it was one of the most stacked day of Musikfest? I lied.  Today has some fantastic rock, electronia, and party music and since it’s a Saturday, it starts early and goes allllll night long.  And good news: the bullshit embedding problems I was having are gone so it’s even easier to stuff your earholes full of good jams.

South Side
Whomp whomp.  Sorry South Side, literally every single band I picked is on the North Side tonight.

North Side
Pet Cheetah – This act is part of the Freedom High School program where Musikfest works with students to book bands. Ranging from super jammy and funky with yes, a violin, to ultra mellow, these Philly-area alt rockers are the perfect way to kick off your lunchtime Musikfest hangs.  They start at Plaza Tropical at noon.

Saint Wilde – This Philly-area group plays melodic, laid back music, perfect for easing into a long evening of Musikfest.  They kick off at 3pm on Main Street.

Crimson Apple – I’m absolutely addicted to this all-female band’s song “Hello”.  It may be my favorite discovery so far of Musikfest.  The girls, all sisters, are LA-based but Hawaii born, and while a late night slot would’ve been a perfect fit for their sound, I’m pumped to check them out nonetheless.  They start at Liederplatz at 4pm.

Men and Whales – straight up alternative rock.  They list Weezer as an influence, and have been known to do their own rendition of “The Sweater Song.”  They play two sets on Main Street, one at 5pm and one at 6:30pm.

Funky Dawgz – We caught these guys at last year at Musikfest and they brought horns and a good time. We’re glad to see them back in a bigger venue after being relegated to the Musikfest Cafe during a recent Levitt show and during the rain at preview night because their fun, easy-going sets are perfect for outdoor venues and dancing.  The funk starts at Volksplatz at 7pm.

Sphynx – This Austin-based group played one of the best sets last year with their 80’s synth-tinged rock music.  Now at a bigger stage and in prime party central, this is going to be a shitload of fun.  They start at Plaza Tropical at 8pm.

Strange Familia – Excellently poppy, synth-driven music from a duo out of Utah.  They’re playing a stripped down set at Lagerplatz at 5pm and a full set starting at 8:30pm on Main Street.
