The Colony Meadery in Allentown is now open for business. Mead, a fermented drink made with honey, is one of the first recorded alcoholic drinks and is experiencing a boom in craft production, similar to what the craft beer and cider industries have experienced in recent years. Colony joins just two other meaderies in the state, and is the first in the Lehigh Valley.
Their current lineup includes Woofiedog (a 9% hopped mead), the Earle (a 9.5% hydromel made with Earl Grey tea, herbs, and English garden spices), and Mo-Mead-O (a 13% mead made with mint and lime).
Future flavors include Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl, a 9.5% mead made with Tupelo honey, which we tried a sample of right from the fermenter that exhibited a bright and zippy flavor, and Pikwant Field, a 9.5% mead made with strawberries and kiwis.
The Colony will be posting their operating hours soon and will be hosting an ‘opening tap’ celebration at Strange Brew in Allentown on December 29th to celebrate their first meads being on draft in the Lehigh Valley.
