Finally, the weekend is here. Unfortunately that means the last few days of Musikfest, but it also means massive amounts of beer, heart-stopping amounts of fattening food, and some of the best damn bands of the festival. Here’s our picks for tonight. DO. NOT. MISS. THE. MUMMIES.
South Side
The Hunts – performing from 5pm to 6:30pm at Americaplatz
This band is a family of 7 who somehow manage to tour around and play together without killing each other. That alone is impressive, let alone their late 2012 release of original songs and covers that range from Jeff Buckley to Bon Iver.
Ball in the House – performing from 8pm to 9:30pm at Musikfest Café
These guys were a pick yesterday, but they cancelled their show so catch them tonight. From yesterday: Well here’s something that you don’t see at Musikfest too often: a capella. This fairly unassuming group of guys from Boston belt out a huge variety of covers and originals.
Here Come the Mummies – performing from 9:30pm to 11pm at Americaplatz
If you only see one show at Musikfest, make this it. This band is immensely fun. They are filthy (for instance, lyrics like “take the skin boat to tuna town” and “wearing out the sideways frown”). They sing a song called Libido Knievel. They have a pelvic thrust-driven instrument called the cow belt. They are amazing, and you’re an idiot if you miss this.
North Side
Ball in the House – performing from 3:30pm to 5pm at Volksplatz
See above.
The Steel Wheels – performing from 5:30pm to 7pm at Volksplatz
In a sea of Americana bands, these guys shy away from the Mumford & Sons style that’s become so damn popular and stick to relying their voices, which provide quite a range.
