    Chocolate Lover’s Soiree

    by theelvee_w2oe3m March 29, 2010

As I was flipping through my photos for posting I realized I never posted up these photos/review of the Chocolate Lover’s Soiree, a fundraiser for the Easton Main Street Initiative that occurred on January 30th.  If you remember, that was the fateful day of the Souper Bowl so I really did some destruction to my body and attended these two gluttonous affairs in one fattening day.

Details are a little fuzzy at this point but I remember a lot of the stuff being pretty pedestrian…the main things that stood out were Sette Luna’s White Chocolate Panna Cotta which was rich but not too heavy.  Easily the most ballsy and interesting combinations came from Tallarico’s Chocolates.  They were featuring a dark chocolate cayenne pepper meltaways.  Cayenne pepper in chocolate is an old recipe, dating back to the Aztecs, but has made a reappearance in mainstream gourmet food circles and recipes in the past few years.  The cayenne peppers is curious in the sense that the full chocolate flavor is displayed without a hint of pollution from the heat, and at the end you get a sudden kick of pepper spice that lingers and diminishes slowly.  The other chocolate from Tallarico’s that was really new and raised the bar for me was their Lapsang Souchong truffles.  Lapsang Souchong is a distinctive tea made so by the process of drying the tea leaves over smoldering pine needles, delivering a unique, smoky campfire taste.  Infusing it into chocolate delivers another depth of flavor I hadn’t experienced before and it was fantastic.  If you Google lapsang souchong truffles there are but a few results of people making them so it’s a fairly distinctive creation.  Now if someone would make a) a scotch truffle and b) a lapsang souchong cayenne meltaway…

The event was sold out and was entirely too crowded.  It was held in the Bank Street Annex in Easton and I could barely move.  I tasted everything pretty much as quickly as I could, shot some photos, and left.  Next year it either needs to be moved to a larger venue, reduce the number of tickets sold, or stager tasting times because it was really uncomfortable.

Below are the offerings as listed on the program and some photos from the event:

    Review: Hookah Turka

    by theelvee_w2oe3m March 29, 2010
    March 29, 2010

There’s a new hookah lounge in town and it goes by the name of Hookah Turka. Supposed to open during Musikfest 2009 and delayed due to city of Bethlehem zoning regulations, the business finally opened its doors the weekend of March 12th with (from what I hear) a great opening weekend featuring a DJ and a belly dancer.

The Souperbowl – A Bit Late But Still Delicious

    by theelvee_w2oe3m March 3, 2010
    March 3, 2010

Well, I’m completely late on posting this because real life has been getting in the way of posting about delicious foods. Well, that’s all taken care of now and we can get down to business. I’m going to go ahead and do a recap of one of the most deliciously gluttonous events I’ve ever attended: Artsquest’s Souperbowl which took place on January 31st. The event was a sold-out fundraiser for the B-Smart After School Program.

    Review: Rock n’ Joe

    by theelvee_w2oe3m February 2, 2010
    February 2, 2010

These days for a cafe to be successful on the north side of Bethlehem, it has to stand out in some way or it’s going to fail. It’s been happening frequently, seeing the closings of Hava Java and the Five Star Cafe. So when I heard a new cafe opened up in the epicenter of all the failed cafe locations, I said to myself, “Do they really think they have what it takes to make it there?”

    Review: Robata of Tokyo

    by theelvee_w2oe3m December 23, 2009
    December 23, 2009

Robata of Tokyo is a fairly well-known Japanese sushi restaurant situated a stone’s throw from the iconic PP&L building in downtown Allentown. Not only does it provide for a nice, relaxed atmosphere, the food is prepared particularly well, however the atmosphere may be lacking a few qualities.

    Review: Starfish Brasserie

    by theelvee_w2oe3m December 2, 2009
    December 2, 2009

The Starfish Brasserie is smack dab in downtown Bethlehem and is just one of the fine restaurants that can be found in the area. Starfish, as well as Edge and Apollo Grille are what I have always considered to be the triangle of upscale dining in Bethlehem, yet for some reason I never made the trip. After seeing on Starfish’s Twitter that they were doing a special $45, 3 course meal with wine pairings for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness, I decided it would be the perfect time to visit.

Review: Carnegie Deli at the Sands Casino

    by theelvee_w2oe3m December 1, 2009
    December 1, 2009

The name Carnegie Deli conjours up all sorts of idyllic scenes of Times Square, a place where you can get lost in the lights and pretend to be famous. Hell, Woody Allen himself has a sandwhich there, aptly described as “lotsa pastrami with lotsa corned beef.” It’s a shame the dreamy New York atmosphere doesn’t translate over to decent service at the Sands Casino’s Carnegie deli, as that was the complete opposite of what I experienced.

    Review: Euroyogurt

    by theelvee_w2oe3m November 24, 2009
    November 24, 2009

If you haven’t been on the Southside of Bethlehem for a while, there’s a relatively new establishment that’s been bringing in hordes of First Friday attendees in search of a refreshing treat that goes by the name of Euroyogurt. Euroyogurt is a rather healthy treat that comes in small, medium, or large dishes and gets healthier with additions of toppings.

    Review: Burgers and More

    by theelvee_w2oe3m November 24, 2009
    November 24, 2009

Burgers and More is celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse’s most recent foray into the culinary world, found locally at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem. Strictly burger joints and gourmet burgers aren’t anything necessarily new, but you’d be hard pressed to find anything like them in the Lehigh Valley.

    Review: The Bookstore Speakeasy

    by theelvee_w2oe3m November 18, 2009
    November 18, 2009

By now, if you’ve got friends that are part of the “in crowd” with the restaurant scene, you’ve heard of the Bookstore. News about this new bar has spread like wildfire, so…
